Hurricane Preparedness

Evacuate if ordered:

If you are told to evacuate, do so immediately. Follow the evacuation routes and instructions from local officials.

Take shelter:

If you are not ordered to evacuate, take shelter in a designated storm shelter or an interior room on the lowest level. Move to higher ground before flooding begins.

Stay away from windows:

Stay away from windows, skylights, and glass doors. You could get hurt by pieces of broken glass or flying debris during a storm.

Prepare an evacuation plan:

Know your zone and learn if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. Create and review your family emergency plan.

Assemble an emergency kit:

Include dry food, safe drinking water, medical supplies, blankets, flashlights, battery-operated radios, and fire extinguishers.

Prepare your home:

Cover windows with storm shutters or with sheets of plywood.

Prepare for power outages:

Be prepared to turn off main energy sources, such as power, water, or gas.

Don't walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters:

If you are trapped by flooding, go to the highest level of the building.

Never leave children or animals in the home alone:

Keep them with you at all times so that they can stay safe as well.

Disaster Supplies

In the time immediately after a natural disaster like a hurricane our local resources may be saturated or exhausted. Power outages, home damage, and flooding can all create difficult situations which can require you to survive on your own for several days. Having a disaster supplies kit ready to go at home can make a huge difference.
